Swissmint, known for honouring significant moments in Swiss history, is commemorating Switzerland’s space programme and its contributions to the European Space Agency (ESA) with a silver coin to be issued on 11 June 2026. The 999 fine silver coin will showcase Switzerland’s role in European space exploration and cooperation with the ESA.
The new 20-gram Swissmint coin marks Switzerland’s longstanding partnership with the Paris-based European Space Agency and the Swiss industrial expertise that has helped propel European rockets into orbit.
A Founding Member, Not Just A Participant
Switzerland’s ties to ESA run deep. The agency was founded in 1975 with the explicit aim of making Europe less technologically and politically dependent on the space powers of the US and the Soviet Union. And Switzerland was there from the start. As a founding member of the now 23-nation agency, Switzerland participates in nearly all ESA programmes, a record few other member states can match.
That participation is not merely institutional. Two Swiss companies play a direct, hands-on role in the Ariane 6 launch vehicle programme: Beyond Gravity and APCO Technologies, both based in Switzerland, supply critical components for the rocket.

Story Told On Coin: Switzerland’s Role In European Space Exploration
The coin’s design is where the story becomes particularly interesting. The reverse side features the upper section of an Ariane 6 launch vehicle. And specifically the payload fairing manufactured by Beyond Gravity Switzerland. This fairing is the nose cone that shields satellites from the intense thermal, acoustic and aerodynamic forces of launch. Once the rocket clears Earth’s atmosphere, the fairing splits cleanly in two and falls away, a moment of high engineering theatre some 100 kilometres above the planet. APCO Technologies, meanwhile, supplies additional components for the launcher as well as essential ground equipment used in its construction.
The obverse depicts the Earth, Moon and Mars encircled by the words “European Space Agency” and “Elevating the future of Europe.” This is the motto of ESA’s Strategy 2040, alongside a view of Europe from space, with Switzerland positioned at the centre of the image.

Swissmint’s Commemorative Tradition
Swissmint has been producing Swiss franc coins in Bern since 1906 and has issued special commemorative coins since 1936. Each is intended as a miniature work of art, honouring significant moments in Swiss history, culture and international life. The ESA coin joins a tradition that has marked everything from historical anniversaries to prominent figures, and now, one of Switzerland’s most consequential ongoing international scientific partnerships.
