UBS Begins Swiss Layoffs As It Shifts Technology Jobs To India And Poland

UBS has launched what is expected to be its largest post-merger redundancy round to date, with termination notices landing across Swiss offices this week as the lender accelerates its cost-cutting push following the Credit Suisse integration.

The cuts hit employees aged over 50 particularly hard within the bank’s domestic wealth management and private banking operations.

According to a Swiss financial blog with inside sources, many of the affected personnel hold senior titles, including executive directors and managers with direct leadership remits.

However, UBS did not provide a comment on the job cuts.

Departing bankers are being placed into the bank’s internal “Coach” outplacement programme, which funds efforts to secure alternative internal or external positions over a multi-month period before employees transition to the state regional employment offices (RAV).

The scale of the exits is already roiling the local talent market. Domestic private banking competitors are seeing an influx of experienced relationship managers.

Industry headhunters note that availability among senior UBS client advisers has reached unprecedented levels, creating hiring opportunities for rival Swiss cantonal banks and boutique wealth managers. Displacing over-50 managing bankers risks client friction, as high-net-worth domestic clients often maintain multi-decade ties to individual relationship managers rather than the parent institution.

Leadership Appointment In Pune, UBS Expansion In India And Poland

Beyond front-office private banking, the staff cuts have extended deeply into UBS’s global technology and back-office infrastructure, led by Chief Operating Officer Beatriz Martin. Martin, who oversees the bank’s non-core integration and technology divisions, is widely regarded as an internal candidate to eventually succeed chief executive Sergio Ermotti.

The cuts coincide with a structural shift of IT operations away from high-cost hubs in Switzerland and the United States.

Martin recently appointed Puneet Vyas as Head of Group Operations Technology. Vyas, a 20-year UBS veteran based out of the bank’s technology campus in Pune, India, will lead the global operational IT structure following the exits of former technology head Mike Dargan and infrastructure chief Paul McEwan.

Vyas is tasked with driving down operating expenditures by relocating enterprise engineering roles to business solution centers in Pune and Hyderabad, where UBS and legacy Credit Suisse teams maintain thousands of developer positions, alongside service hubs in Krakow and Wroclaw.

The restructuring illustrates the changing internal balance of the enlarged Swiss lender.

While co-head of global wealth management Iqbal Khan oversees Asian and Middle Eastern growth from Singapore, Hong Kong, and Doha, the group’s domestic headcount faces sustained downsizing to extract promised merger synergies.
