Switzerland is positioning the Geneva AI Summit 2027, to be held on 21-22 June 2027, as a platform to turn global AI discussions into lasting partnerships, rather than a one-off diplomatic gathering, in line with the strategic direction set by the Federal Council.
The event, themed “Bridging Innovation and Trust,” is designed around two central priorities. The first is to treat artificial intelligence as a driver of prosperity and progress for all, framing AI primarily as an economic and developmental opportunity rather than solely as a risk to manage. The second priority is fostering trustworthy, responsible and safe use of the technology, addressing the governance, safety and ethical questions that have dominated international AI policy debates in recent years.
Crucially, the Federal Council has stated explicitly that the summit’s ambition extends beyond the event itself.
Switzerland wants concrete, ongoing collaborations to emerge from the gathering rather than just a communiqué or declaration.
Geneva AI Summit 2027: Bringing Together A Broad Coalition
The summit is designed to convene a wide cross-section of global stakeholders: governments, international organisations, the academic and business communities, and civil society. This breadth reflects an intent to treat AI governance as a multi-stakeholder issue rather than one confined to state actors or tech companies alone.
Switzerland sees the event as a chance to combine its scientific, economic and diplomatic strengths, leveraging Geneva’s existing role as a hub for international organisations and CERN’s legacy of complex multinational scientific cooperation. The government has framed this as an opportunity to play an active role in shaping the broader international debate on artificial intelligence, rather than simply hosting a venue for others to set the agenda.

President Guy Parmelin Met Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi To Host AI Summit
Geneva 2027 continues a lineage of global AI safety and governance summits: Bletchley Park, UK (2023), Seoul, South Korea, Paris, France, and New Delhi, India (2026). Switzerland becomes the fifth host in this rotating series, positioning Geneva alongside these prior venues as a center for AI diplomacy.
Switzerland’s hosting role traces back to January 28, 2026, when the country first signalled its willingness to host the event. Geneva was then confirmed as the venue on February 19, 2026, when President Guy Parmelin met Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi, since India had hosted the previous edition of the AI Summit.
Former CERN Director-General Fabiola Gianotti Is Named Swiss Delegate
The Swiss Federal Council has set out its strategic direction for the Geneva AI Summit 2027 and appointed Fabiola Gianotti, former Director-General of CERN, as its Delegate to lead implementation of the event’s objectives.
The decision was taken at the Federal Council’s meeting on August 12, 2026. Gianotti, who led the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) from 2016 to 2025, will help shape the summit’s strategic positioning, mobilise high-level national and international stakeholders, and drive initiatives stemming from the event.
