Woman Dies in Hospital After Being Hit by Rolling Van in Zurich

An elderly woman was seriously injured on 21 May 2026, Thursday afternoon, after a delivery van rolled away and struck her on a sidewalk in Zurich’s District 10.

The Zurich police report said that a delivery van rolled away from the intersection of Michelstrasse and Engadinerweg towards Regensdorferstrasse for reasons still unknown. The elderly pedestrian was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries. However, she succumbed to her injuries today, 22 May 2026.

Investigation On the Rolling Driverless Van Still Underway

The circumstances of the accident remain under investigation. Zurich Public Prosecutor’s Office and Zurich City Police are examining what caused the vehicle to move, while the force’s accident investigation unit and specialists from the Zurich Forensic Institute were called in to secure photographic, dimensional and material evidence.

A care team was also sent to support the van driver after the incident.

What do we know so far? Zurich City Police said the accident happened shortly after 1 p.m. in Höngg, when the driverless van, for reasons still unclear, moved towards Regensdorferstrasse. After travelling several metres, it hit a pedestrian walking on the pavement.
