Zermatt has no shortage of hotels. The car-free village at the foot of the Matterhorn is one of Switzerland’s most competitive resort markets, and the latest Hotel Rating 2026/27 by Andrin Willi recognised 14 properties there alone. Standing out in that crowd takes more than a Matterhorn view, which every hotel in town can claim. Le Mirabeau Resort & Spa has managed it, newly placing eighth among Switzerland’s top 10 four-star holiday hotels.
This is the journey of how a long-established, family-run hotel grew into a full resort without losing the warmth that made it work in the first place.
You step off the Glacier Express or a train from Visp, and you’re at the hotel in under ten minutes without needing a transfer.
The location is correctly described by the Julen-Reichenbach family as “peacefully situated yet centrally located.”
You get the convenience of being in the centre without the late-night noise that comes with it. Importantly, for skiers, the Gornergrat Railway is the main draw, taking you straight up the mountain from the village. For anyone arriving by train, it removes the usual friction of hauling luggage through a resort.
Le Mirabeau works best for skiers who value a serious recovery setup and like being minutes from the Gornergrat Railway.
The Rooms: Four Buildings, One Identity
Le Mirabeau isn’t one building but four. It is spread across the Alpine wing, the main building, the newer Mirabeau Étoile, and the Antoine building, which has serviced apartments. In total, there are 30 double rooms, five singles, 33 junior suites, and three suites, plus nine serviced apartments, 16 family junior suites, and two penthouse duplex apartments.
The variety is deliberate.
Across all of them, the standard kit is consistent: oak parquet, coffee and tea facilities, minibars, flat-screen TVs, bathrobes, slippers and Pure Altitude toiletries. Families get connecting doors or the top-floor family suite with a Matterhorn view. It’s a sensible spread. Rather than forcing everyone into one room type, the hotel lets you choose the atmosphere that suits you, whether that’s rustic Alpine, sleek boutique or a self-contained apartment.
The Spa: The Real Reason To Book!
This isn’t a token wellness corner with a sauna and a treadmill. It’s a proper retreat, with a mountain herb-scented sauna, a mountain crystal steam bath, a Valaisan wood sauna, a glacier shower and relaxation waterbeds. There’s also a large swimming pool and a Jacuzzi, and in summer the garden opens up for sunbathing and reading.

The spa sits on the lower floor of the main building, alongside the massage and treatment rooms. After a day on the slopes, the sequence matters: glacier shower, then sauna, then the waterbeds. It’s the kind of setup that turns a ski holiday into a recovery holiday, and it’s clearly a core part of what Le Mirabeau is selling. The new fitness centre in the Étoile building, notably open to external guests as well as hotel residents, extends that offering beyond the hotel itself.

Five Kitchens, Something For Everyone
Le Mirabeau doesn’t do “one restaurant and a bar”. It runs five distinct food and drink outlets, each with its own character. L’Epicure is the flagship, a modern, elegant French restaurant with an Alpine touch, open evenings only and smart-casual in dress code. Chef Géraldine Géroué serves what the hotel calls “Cuisine Gourmande”, with dishes like foie gras gourmandises, a porterhouse steak for two, and lobster linguine in a cognac-infused bisque with bottarga flakes
Restaurant Veranda is the workhorse, serving breakfast and a daily tasting menu in a winter garden with Matterhorn views. Executive Chef Alain Kuster, who holds 14 points in the Gault-Millau guide, runs the kitchen here. It’s casual Alpine dining, the kind of place you eat at every night of a week-long stay without getting bored.
Marie’s Deli fills the gaps, open 10am to 10pm with homemade delicatessen, local specialties and comfort food like bone broth with marrow dumplings, alongside French touches such as foie gras, oysters and caviar in high season. Le Bar runs all day, from morning cakes and Ronnefeldt tea through to evening cocktails by the fireplace. Josef’s Wine Lounge rounds it out as a co-working and event space with a wine focus.
So, What’s The Verdict?

Le Mirabeau is a hotel that knows what it is. It’s a family-run Alpine resort that has grown carefully, adding a spa, a new wing and a serious food programme without losing the personal touch that comes from three generations of the same family running it. The location is about as good as Zermatt gets, the spa is genuinely excellent, and the range of rooms means there’s something for most travellers.
If you want a proper Alpine resort holiday, with a real spa, serious food, and the Matterhorn out the window, Le Mirabeau delivers on its promise. It’s the kind of place you book for a week and leave feeling like you’ve actually had a holiday.
