After a 12-year and 8-month stint at UBS, as global head of technology services, Paul McEwen has confirmed he has left the bank and will join Citi.

In a LinkedIn post, McEwen said his decision was difficult because it meant leaving colleagues across Technology Services and the wider firm. He said the infrastructure managed by the team was “the foundation of everything the bank does” and that he was leaving UBS “in very good hands.”

McEwen did not mention UBS’s capital dispute, possible restructuring or artificial-intelligence strategy. UBS has not publicly given a reason for McEwen’s departure.

McEwen leaving the bank was already a news running in the circuits according to two reports from a local financial blog citing sources.

The reported exit comes as UBS places greater emphasis on AI across its operations. Since January, its Group Technology function has reported to Beatriz Martin Jimenez, the bank’s group chief operating officer. UBS said when it announced the change that the structure would help it prioritise technology and AI initiatives while completing the integration of Credit Suisse.

Could McEwen’s departure be connected to disagreements over the bank’s AI push?
