Art Basel, the world’s premier modern and contemporary art fair, has announced a groundbreaking digital exhibition program set to transform the way audiences engage with art in 2026. The initiative, revealed at a press conference in Basel on Monday, will combine augmented reality installations with traditional gallery displays across the city’s iconic Messeplatz venue.

A New Era for Art Fairs

The program, titled Horizons Without Borders, represents a CHF 12 million investment in digital infrastructure and will feature over 200 artists from 45 countries. “We are not replacing the physical experience of art,” said Art Basel director Maike Cruse. “We are expanding the canvas on which artists can create and audiences can connect.”

“This is the most ambitious integration of digital and physical art spaces we have ever attempted. It reflects where the global art world is heading.” — Maike Cruse, Director of Art Basel

Swiss Innovation Meets Global Art

Central to the new program is a partnership with ETH Zürich’s digital arts laboratory, which has developed proprietary projection mapping technology that allows artworks to extend beyond their physical frames into surrounding gallery spaces. Visitors equipped with specially designed AR glasses will experience entirely new dimensions of curated exhibitions.

The collaboration underscores Switzerland’s growing reputation as a hub where technological innovation and cultural heritage intersect. Several Swiss cantons have pledged additional funding to support digital art residencies in connection with the program.

Industry Reactions and Expectations

Art market analysts have responded enthusiastically to the announcement, noting that digital integration could attract a younger demographic to Art Basel while maintaining the fair’s reputation for curatorial excellence. Early ticket pre-registrations have already surpassed last year’s figures by 35 percent, suggesting strong public interest in the hybrid format.

The 2026 edition of Art Basel is scheduled for June 18–21. The digital exhibition component will remain accessible online for six months following the physical fair, extending the reach of participating artists to a global audience estimated at over two million viewers.
